Why build a boat?

I want to start with a quick back story about what led me to finally pull the trigger on such a daunting project.

I had been been going back and forth between buying a boat and building a boat for a long while. In the meantime, I have been fishing out of my Solo Skiff. I like the solo a lot but it obviously lacks in room and speed. I have taken it to some very isolated places and had some great times fishing skinny water. I often find myself wishing I could share the good times with friends and family. Hence the desire to upgrade.

Whether I was going to buy or build, I had something very specific in mind. Here is what I was looking for:

  • Poling and Casting platforms.
  • Pole in 6” of water.
  • Stealthy quiet in the water.
  • Cut through some chop on a breezy day.
  • Can move quick (35mph+).
  • Comfortable to cruise in when not fishing.
  • I like my music so I want a good system.
  • High quality hand built that can be appreciated.
  • Power pole.

Finding a boat with all these specifications was proving to be a challenge. It became apparent quickly that a boat with these features was going to cost in the ballpark of $50,000!

I was doing my daily search on microskiff.com and came across a post where someone was selling some forms they had used to frame a hull for a boat they were building. It just so happened to be the same design boat that I had at one time considered building! (Keep in mind that the MicroSkiff page has people on it from around the world and it is by no means a local group). I reached out to the guy selling it and asked where he was located. He lived less than 10 miles from me! That unlikely coincidence sealed the deal for me. Enough searching for boats that were close to what I wanted, I am going to build exactly what I want!

This page will highlight the trials, tribulations, and successes of a first time boat builder. I created this site to share the journey with family and friends as well as collaborate with other builders.

Stay tuned as I build a 18.5’ Beryllium Skiff designedly Chris Morejohn!
